From Johannesburg to Zanzibar, 5500 kms across South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania.

You may wonder why an Italian tour operator proposes a motorcycle tour to Africa: you probably don't know that Mototouring have been organizing trips to Africa since 1985. We have therefore decided to add the Transafrica trip to the English list and not just to the Italian one.

The Transafrica tour has been organized every year since 1996 with Italian customers. Groups consist of 15 up to 34 persons (in 2003).

This bike tour is within everyone's reach, routed almost exclusively on tarmac. The exception is a couple of legs where the tarmac is in "African" condition, although never too difficult for any average motorcyclist, even with a pillion rider. All nights are spent in top-class hotels except for a couple where no alternatives exist in the area. The legs are around 350/400 kilometres per day with 4 sizeable rest stops in enchanting places and hotels: Kruger National Park, Victoria Falls, Lake Malawi, Mikumi National Park, Zanzibar.

Dal 1996 la Transafrica è ormai un classico e un viaggio tecnicamente alla portata di tutti, effettuato completamente su strade asfaltate, tranne un paio di tappe con asfalto in condizioni "africane" ma mai al di fuori delle possibilita' di qualsiasi medio motociclista anche con accompagnatore al seguito, tutti i pernottamenti sono in hotel di ottimo livello tranne un paio dove non esiste alternativa agli hotels proposti. Le tappe sono intorno ai 350/400 km al giorno e con 4 soste di relax importanti in luoghi e hotels incantevoli : il parco Kruger, le cascate Vittoria, il Lago Malawi, il parco di Mikumi e Zanzibar.
E' un viaggio impegnativo dal punto di vista opeartivo per le caratteristiche stesse del viaggio che richiede una organizzazione complessa e mezzi assistenza in loco da riportare in Sud Africa alla fine del viaggio, ma unico nel genere e da "Una volta nella vita". Provare per credere, "Qualcuno" lo ha fatto 4 volte !!!

Day 1 - Johannesburg
Day of arrival in Johannesburg, collection of motorcycles, followed by a free afternoon to relax and gain confidence with the bike and the South African left hand drive.

Giorno 1 - Johannesburg
Giornata di incontro a Johannesburg, presa in consegna delle moto spedite dall'Italia o noleggiate in Sud Africa. Giornata di ambientamento con breve escursione per adattarsi all guida a sinistra, cena di benvenuto e pernottamento in hotel.

Day 2 - Johannesburg - Kruger Park
After breakfast we make our way to the Kruger Park, one of the biggest in Africa and one of the most spectacular for the number of animals to be found there. We will dine and spend the night near the park gates. (450 km)

Dopo colazione trasferimento al parco Kruger tra i piu' grandi in Africa e tra i piu spettacolari per la quantità di animali che vi si trovano. Cena e pernottamento alle porte del parco. ( km 450)

Day 3 - Safari in Kruger Park
The day is spent with a minibus at our disposal for the visit to Kruger National Park, after which we will return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Giornata con minibus a disposizione per la visita al parco Kruger, in serata rientro al lodge per cena e pernottamento.

Day 4 - Kruger - Tzaneen
Departure from Kruger for Tzaneen, area of tea plantations, via the beautiful mountainous region of the Drakensberg. The temperatures may go down to close to zero, especially in the morning. Arrival at Mogobaskloof hotel.

Partenza dal Kruger per Tzaneen, zona di coltivazione del tè, attraversando la bellissima zona dei monti Drakensberg. Le temperature, specialmente in mattinata, potranno essere vicine allo zero. Arrivo al Mogobaskloof hotel. ( km 350)

Day 5 - Tzaneen - Louis Trichardt
After breakfast we depart northward, stopping on the way to visit a typical tea farm in the region. In the evening we'll arrive at the end of the last leg in South Africa, staying in the town of Louis Trichardt.

Dopo colazione partenza verso nord per Louis Trichardt e la frontiera con lo Zimbabwe, Messina(!), ma non prima di aver visitato una fattoria di produzione del te' tipica della zona. In serata arrivo alla cittadina ultima tappa in territorio sudafricano. ( km 400)

Day 6 - Louis Trichardt - Great Zimbabwe
From Louis Trichardt to Great Zimbabwe and across the first border of the motorcycle tour, entering Africa, or rather, a 'more African' Africa. Board and lodging at the Great Zimbabwe Hotel, practically within sight of the famous ruins.

Da Louis Trichardt a Great Zimbabwe attraversando la prima frontiera del nostro viaggio, oggi entriamo in Africa o meglio, in un'Africa 'più africana'. Il pernottamento è previsto al Great Zimbabwe hotel praticamente in vista delle famose rovine. ( km 300)

Day 7 - Great Zimbabwe - Bulawayo
After breakfast, we have planned a two-hour visit to the Great Zimbabwe fortifications with a local guide, a truly magical experience, and then on towards Bulawayo with planned arrival in the afternoon.

Dopo colazione abbiamo previsto una visita di un paio d'ore alle fortificazioni di Great Zimbabwe, un luogo magico, con una guida locale, per poi proseguire in direzione di Bulawayo con arrivo previsto nel pomeriggio. ( km 270)

Day 8 - Bulawayo - Victoria Falls
Morning visit to the Matopo Hills, a marvellous national park where Cecil Rhodes, the founder of Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe), is buried. In the afternoon we move on to Victoria Falls, arriving in the early evening.

In mattinata visita alle Matopo Hill, lo stupendo parco nazionale dove riposa Cecil Rhodes, il fondatore della Rhodesia, odierna Zimbabwe, e proseguimento nel pomeriggio per le Cascate Vittoria con arrivo in serata. ( km 400)

Day 9 - Victoria Falls
Day spent on visits and excursions to the Victoria Falls. It will be possible to go rafting on the Zambezi, take helicopter or private plane flights, play golf, and visit the falls. Just simply relaxing around the hotel's swimming pool is also always an option

Giornata di visita ed escursioni a Victoria Falls. Sara' possibile effettuare rafting sullo Zambezi, voli in elicottero o aerei privati, giocare a golf e, naturalmente, visitare le Cascate, oltre che semplicemente, rilassarsi ai bordi della piscina dell'albergo.

Day 10 - Victoria Falls - Lusaka
Departure and crossing the second border of our journey, thus entering Zambia and heading for the capital Lusaka. A demanding day of almost 600 kilometres without alternative, but luckily the roads are in good condition.

Day 11 - Lusaka - Chipata
From Lusaka to Chipata, along a real African road! The road is in bad condition in some parts and a good dose of prudence will be important. There are numerous villages we will go through and endless landscapes which is incomparable in its natural beauty.

Day 12 - Chipata - Lake Malawi
From Chipata towards the border with Malawi and its incredible natural scenery. Malawi is a little known country, with almost no tourism except for a few South Africans that spend their holidays along the splendid banks of the lake Malawi which stretches for over 600 kilometres from north to south, practically covering the whole length of the country.

Da Chipata verso il confine con il Malawi e i suoi incredibili paesaggi. Il Malawi è un paese poco conosciuto, il turismo e' praticamente inesistente, solo pochi Sudafricani usano passare le vacanze presso le splendide rive del lago Malawi lungo oltre 600 km praticamente da nord a sud per tutta la lunghezza del paese. Day 13 - Lake Malawi
Day of relaxing at Livingstonia Beach Hotel in Senga Bay. This is a little corner of paradise on the coast of the lake where waters are clear and clean, making it possible to swim, snorkel and scuba dive.

Giornata di relax al Livingstonia Beach Hotel a Senga Bay, angolo di paradiso sulle coste dell'immenso lago dalle acque limpide e dolci dove e' possibile bagnarsi in totale sicurezza effettuando escursioni sopra e sotto l'acqua.

Day 14 - Lake Malawi - Mzuzu
Back on the bikes to take the coastal road as far as Mzuzu. Going through a lot of villages and back routes, we take in a real slice of African life. This is a marvellous opportunity for those wanting to take some photos before we return to an altitude of over 1000 metres in the Malawian mountains.

Riprendiamo le moto per costeggiare il lago fino a Mzuzu con attraversamento di molti villaggi e scorci di vera vita africana, una pacchia per gli appassionati di foto. In serata si ritorna in montagna a oltre 1000 metri tra le montagne del Malawi. ( km 300)

Day 15 - Mzuzu - Utengule
The road, which leads us to the fourth and last border of our journey, is one of the most attractive, but also in awful condition. We will need considerable caution to avoid the numerous potholes in the tarmac which is often almost non-existent. Arrival in the evening at Utengule, a lodge immersed in the Tanzanian coffee plantations.

Giorno 15 - Mzuzu - Mbeya - Utengule
La strada che ci porta alla quarta ed ultima frontiera del nostro viaggio è tra le più suggestive anche se in pessime condizioni. Occorrerà molta prudenza per affrontare le molte buche sull'asfalto spesso quasi inesistente. Arrivo in serata a Mbeya immersa tra le coltivazioni di tè della Tanzania. Arrivo in serata in una guest house immersa nelle piantagioni di te'. ( km 450)

Day 16 - Utengule Coffee farm
Day of relaxing and visits to the Coffee farm. A swimming pool and various games will be available.

Giorno 16 - Utengule - Mbeya - Mikumi
Attraversando praticamente tutta la Tanzania da ovest ad est per arrivare in un luogo nel quale i leoni possono tranquillamente passeggiare in mezzo alla strada statale, fare attenzione !! ( km 550)

Day 17 - Utengule - Mikumi Park
Crossing virtually the whole of Tanzania from west to east to arrive in a place where the wild animals can stroll around the state road. Beware of the lions!!

Day 18 - Mikumi - Dar Es Salaam
Morning safari (by car) inside the Mikumi Park and in the afternoon on to Dar Es Salaam, the final destination of our journey.

In mattinata proseguimento per Dar Es Salaam meta finale del nostro viaggio. Trasferimento in hotel e consegna delle moto per l'imballo e la spedizione di rientro in Italia o per il trasporto a Johannesburg delle moto noleggiate. ( km 250)

Day 19 - Dar - Zanzibar
During the morning we will pack the bikes in a container for shipping back to South Africa. After lunch we take a flight or ferry to the island of Zanzibar, around 20 minutes by plane and 70 minutes by boat, transfer to the Serena Inn hotel for dinner and overnight. Those who will not go to Zanzibar have to take a flight back home- sorry your holiday is over!

Mattinata di relax e nel pomeriggio volo Dar - Zanzibar oppure volo di rientro in Italia per coloro che non hanno scelto l'estensione Zanzibar.

Free days on the island with various sea and land excursions and visits to places of main interest.

Per coloro che hanno scelto l'escursione a Zanzibar giornate libere sull'isola con escursioni varie e relax, sara' possibile, per chi lo volesse, organizzare in loco escursioni e visite ai luoghi di principale interesse in mare e a terra.

Day 22 - Zanzibar and return flight home
Day of departure from Zanzibar to Dar Es Salaam, connecting with your flight back home. Now the trip is really finished!!

Giorno 22 - Volo di rientro in Italia
In tarda mattinata trasferimento in aeroporto per il volo da Zanzibar a Dar Es Salaam con volo in coincidenza per il rientro in Europa.
