A solitary motorbike tour around the world

Here I am, Davide Biga, I'm 35 and after many adventures and many km (etc. etc.). I decided to face: A SOLITARY TOUR AROUND THE WORLD......!

Since I was 16 years old I can not live without a motorcycle, and after two Cagiva Mito, a Yamaha XT600, a Honda Dominator, an Africa Twin, a short period (just to vent two horses) on the legendary Ducati 996, now I find myself as a happy owner of an exuberant KTM 950ADV and an indefatigable BMW R1150GS with 110,000 km.

The departure will be for May 2011 and will last about 10/12 months. I know what you're thinking: but where does this guy find all this time???. You are right, I'm lucky. But I can also say that my luck is due only by my passion for the beloved two-wheelers.

I have driven a number of motorbike trips and among the most interesting there are:
- 2003 and 2005 tour in Morocco
- 2006 and 2010 tour in Tunisia and Malta
- 2007 tour in Iceland
- 2008 tour beyond the Balkans, Turkey and Iran
- 2010 Ride for Life in Morocco where I have been chosen by Yamaha to field test its newest creature, the 1200 Tenerè in a humanitarian expedition. Unforgettable experience for the purpose of the initiative and for the opportunity I was offered.

If you want, I have collected some pictures and comments about my travels in this slideshow, or you can find other materials on my Facebook page.

The organization and management of an event of this importance, it is not a trivial matter and it is only thanks to the help and support of great friends like David Peruzzi who, with commitment and passion, allow me to realize this dream.
With him we decided on when, how and what to do. Today, after a year of preparation, assisted by Roberto Tesio, Guido Perrone and Daniela Mondino, we founded our amateur sports association, the MWT , that will follow all the administrative aspects, the planning and the sponsorship of the trip.

See you soon,
Davide

The journey will be followed day by day through the information coming from a GPS transceiver installed on the bike, and Davide comments arriving daily via SMS, email or any other means that Davide will be able to find during his adventurous journey.

===== The itinerary =====

Europe and Asia
An enterprise full of difficulties: environmental, climatic, technical, physical and psychological. The path will start from Europe with its fast highways: within a few days you can ride those hot and sunny of Italy and France, to get to the less bright and very cold in Norway , Sweden and Finland.
In this geographical region you can relax regarding the management of the bike: mechanics everywhere and availability of spare parts. Also from the psico-physical point of view you will find there as to house: good hotels, good food, and with the English language, you can chat with many people.
Continuing toward east we have Russia to cross completely, and in its far east, above the Kazakistan and Mongolia, you may encounter unexpected surprises of all types: roads in bad conditions, Siberian climate (in the true sense of the word), difficulties in finding a mechanic for a sophisticated motorbike, the physical and psychic tiredness not probably assisted by good food and by a good bed. It will be difficult to find someone to talk in English. Another potential risk can be the bureaucracy, insensitive to the roadmap of a biker that is facing the around the world tour.
Locations crossed in Europe and Asia: ==> Mondovì ==> Hamburg ==> Copenaghen ==> Oslo ==> Bergen ==> Cape North ==> Helsinki ==> St. Petersburg ==> Moscow (Trans-Siberian start) ==> Novosibirsk ==> Ulan Ude ==> Vladivostok ==> Iwata (visit to the headquarters of Yamaha Motors) ==> Ferry to Alaska.

North and Central America
Having overcome the difficulties and embarked for the Alaska you can relax on the ferry you can relax and think Canada / USA path where it will be enough to have a credit card to solve almost any problem. Fast highways at a controlled speed (here you must be very careful...) and breathtaking landscapes, especially inside the great parks. The road to be crossed will be long and the climatic conditions between north and south will be very different.
Locations crossed in North and Central America: ==> Anchorage ==> Vancouver ==> Portland ==> San Francisco ==> Salt Lake City ==> Denver ==> Las Vegas ==> Los Angeles

Central and South America
Central and South America introduce new difficulties to the heights and desert areas with sandy roads, and with sand and salt in high altitude deserts of northern Peru and Bolivia . You will cross the equator, going south through long rectilinear roads along the Pacific, down to the last edges of earth: Chile and Argentina, near the South Pole . Over you cannot continue and therefore I will go up again up to Buenos Aires, a good grilled meat to restore the body and the mind in preparation to the crossing of the Atlantic.
Locations crossed in Central and South America: ==> Guadalajara ==> Panama ==> Lima ==> La Paz ==> San Pedro de Atacama ==> Antofagasta ==> Atacama Desert ==> Salta ==> Mendoza (Routa 40) ==> Santiago ==> Ushuaia ==> Buenos Aires ==> Ferry to South Africa.

Africa
Africa: the last part of the enterprise but that could be the most difficult. The countries to be crossed are very different and they will change almost continuously: you will pass from the rich and easily crossable South Africa , to countries as Tanzania , Kenya , Ethiopia and Sudan where the difficulties will certainly be higher and the unexpected will be encountered at every turn. Roads and trails, asphalt and soil, sand and stones: it will be hard for the bike but especially for the biker. Africa however has a particular charm, so you cannot think of crossing Africa just to reach the goal, it will be therefore the case to divert toward west to arrive in Mauritania and therefore to go up again through Morocco to reach the Strait of Gibraltar.
Locations crossed in Africa: ==> Cape Town ==> Windhoek ==> Lusaka ==> Dar el Salam ==> Nairobi ==> Addis Ababa ==> Khartoum ==> Cairo ==> Tripoli ==> Tunis ==> Algiers ==> Nouakchott ==> Marrakech

Europe
Back in Europe, home air. The last stretch of road through Spain and France will bring my spirit to the family environment. The friends and supporters waiting for me, the dream of a welcome lunch, with our inimitable cuisine. At last the dreamed rest, with the nostalgia of the just lived experience, and the mind already turned to the path of the next adventure.
Locations crossed in the return to Europe: ==> Malaga ==> Lisbon ==> Montpellier ==> Mondovì
